A Missed Opportunity for Margate

As someone who spends a lot of time in our community, I often hear residents talk about the things that make Margate special;

our neighborhoods, our diversity, and the people who call this city home.

That's why I've been thinking about something that's missing.

June is Caribbean American Heritage Month, and June 19th is Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Both are opportunities to bring people together, celebrate culture, learn from history, and strengthen community connections.

Yet here in Margate, we don't currently have a city-sponsored celebration recognizing either one.

I believe that's a missed opportunity.

Margate is home to many Caribbean families who have contributed tremendously to our city. They own businesses, serve in our schools, volunteer in our community, and help make Margate the diverse and welcoming place it is today.

Likewise, Juneteenth is an important part of American history. Recognizing it isn't about politics. It's about acknowledging our history, celebrating freedom, and bringing neighbors together.

Community events don't have to be expensive. They can be as simple as a family-friendly gathering, cultural performances, educational exhibits, local food vendors, or partnerships with community organizations and churches.

The point isn't the size of the event. The point is showing residents that their city values them and recognizes the cultures and traditions that help make Margate unique.

If elected to the Margate Commission, I would like to see us explore opportunities to celebrate more of the people who make up our community. When residents feel included, neighborhoods become stronger, civic engagement grows, and community pride follows.

Margate has always been more than buildings and roads. It's the people who live here that matter most.
